Dave released Final Burn v0.101 with these new features:

FarFetch'd and R. Belmont released Modeler v0.1.1 with these new features and fixes:

General

  • Yet another attempt at the 555 fix. If it doesn't work please post the contents of the "stdout.txt" file created by the emulator.
  • PCM banking improved. This fixes many missing sound effects in GA2, including the sword swinging and the character select screen noises.
  • Background graphics greatly improved for Sonic. This and other fixes made Arabian Fight about as playable, so I've enabled it.
  • "Disable sound" checkbox added to GUI. Note that sound is used to generate the emulator's timing so the 60 FPS limiter is disabled when sound is off. We'll fix this at some point.
Win32 specific
  • DirectSound driver bugfixed, so sound is much clearer now on Win32 for many soundcards (it was fine for me before with SB Live / LiveWare 3.0, but apparently it wasn't for many others). This may also have caused unnecessary slowdowns on some machines.
  • Upgraded to the new SDL 1.1.8, which allows us to enable Sidewinder gamepad support (this was only available on Linux in 0.1.0 and 0.1.0a). The "M" button inserts coins and the "Start" button is player 1 start. You should be able to figure out the rest :-)

Thanks to Patrick M. Volpi for the news!

  Thursday, 01. February 2001

Final Burn v0.091 has just been released with these new additions:

  • Fixed the problem with the sprites on the Ice on the Beach stage.
  • Fixed the problem with the Capcom/Ryu shadow screen
  • But haven't fixed anything else yet (e.g. the X after-fight screen or the one-frame QSound glitch)
  • Hey - doesn't the rowscroll effect on the Danger Room look great? :)

The long awaited Raine v0.30 is finally released! There are quite a lot of changes so please read the whatsnew.txt file yourself! A Linux version and a Windows port are also available. You will notice that lots of romsets were changed in this release, I suggest that you let ClrMAME Pro do the job of reorganizing the sets.

You can now get the XOR tables for xmencota from CPS2Shock!

Gridle added yesterdays MAME development news to the MAME WIP page!

Update: Looks like today will be an interesting day for arcade emulation. The first *three* releases for today came from Dave and Final Burn v0.090 is the latest. The new features are:

v0.090

  • I accidentally left the 06 (Brazil) region out of VSav - sorry! Added again now!

v0.089

  • I left a tiny bit of debugging code in 0.088, now fixed.

v0.088

  • Added support for X-Men: Children of the Atom (Jpn)
  • Added some sound to the CPS1 games. No ADPCM yet.
  • Added some more analog input options, useful mainly for joypads. So if you have a joypad, try "J1 Normal Slider" for After Burner and Rail Chase, and "J1 Centering Slider" for Power Drift, Galaxy Force and Out Run. If you have an analog joystick, try "J1 Absolute". After extended periods of 'testing' we have concluded these are more playable ;)
  • Added auto-saving for the volatile memory in the Sega games as well (if bDrvSaveAll is 1 of course)
  • Added a Title switch for VSav - just affects the graphic after you insert coin (0=Vampire Savior, 1=Darkstalkers...)
  • Dip switches can now be changed from the emu while the game is running. Double-click on the dip switch in the input menu, and change the value. Changes happen straight away. Very useful! (Some game options may need the game to be reset to take effect though.)
  • Reading input every frame is now optional (bReadInputEveryFrame in finalburn.ini) Default is on.

Roman Scherzer released ClrMAME Pro v1.92 with these new features:

  • added: not-separated-biosroms-warning when enabling adv. unneeded
  • added: warning message when scanner and rebuilder merge mode differ
  • misc : disabling 'name' doesn't disable 'missing' now (but enabling 'missing' does enable 'name')..hehe..confusing..no way ?
  • misc : merging between different bios systems can be allowed
  • misc : rewrote the clipboard routines (much faster now)
  • fixed: rebuilder/merger rebuilds/merges only activated sets

The latest MAME development is now documented on the MAME WIP page!

And here is Final Burn v0.087 from Dave with one new feature: "Input is now always read for every frame, even if the emu is frame skipping. It makes no difference here since the emu hardly ever frame-skips, so I'm uploading this mainly because I'm curious - does it help anyone else's controller problems?"

David Raingeard released Calice v0.0.4a with these new additions: "The emulation has been speed up a little bit. The compatibility is better, (block sprites are emulated now). There is 8 bpp and 15 bpp rendering modes. Willow is playable now. Strider too. It is possible to build new drivers using my "script engine". Have a look at the .DRV files with notepad and have fun =)". Thanks to Retrogames for the news!

Not even the Super Bowl can stop Dave. He already released two new versions and Final Burn v0.086 adds these things:

v0.086

  • CPS2 EEPROM data (which holds the settings in the test menu) is now stored to disk.
  • If bDrvSaveAll in finalburn.ini is 1, all CPS Ram (i.e. the current state) will also be saved to disk. (But save slots and mid-emu saving are not supported yet)

v0.085

  • (Added a few CPS1 games to save people rom swapping)
  • Added support for Megaman (Asia), (no sound)
  • Added support for Rockman (Jpn), (no sound)
  • Added support for Ghouls 'N Ghosts (no sound)

Thanks to Retrogames for the news!

Dave just released Final Burn v0.084 which some great new features:

  • Added keys for all three Punches and Kicks in the CPS2 games. To define them, use the Input list.
  • (Vampire) Fixed the problem with the EEPROM emulation. (Note EEPROM is not saved to disk yet though.)
  • (VSav) Fixed the graphical glitch where Shadow was shown on the Red Curtain screen
  • (Vampire) vampja.ini should have been called vampj.ini, fixed.

  • The debugger window now renders properly in all cases {Raphael Nabet]
  • Fixed problem with some new 020 opcodes, also fixed crash when using renderer plugin. [Brad Oliver]

Gridle updated the MAME WIP page with news about improvements in the Taito sound and CPS2 emulation.

Your daily Final Burn update is here. Dave released Final Burn v0.083 with these new features:

  • Made 640x480 the default res, because it works quite well for all games. For CPS2 scanlines, make sure the res is 640x480 in finalburn.ini. Now just make sure stretch is NOT ticked, and hit scanlines. Voila - fullscreen scanlines.
  • Fixed "VS Screen" rowscroll problem (background effect) and alignment of the hiscore screen.
  • Final Burn now checks for CRC *errors* in a Zip file (i.e. if the zip file is corrupt) as well as checking if the CRCs of the roms are correct.

Barry Rodewald released QSound Player v1.4.1 which should have much better sounding samples!

  Friday, 26. January 2001

I added an FAQ for Darkstalkers/Vampire to the FAQ page and remember to visit CPS2Shock as well for the XOR tables for Vampire!

Dave released Final Burn v0.080 which adds these new features:

  • Added Vampire (Jpn), which is also known as DarkStalkers. We haven't found a region switch for it yet :( There may not be one. There's a problem with the eeprom - haven't figured it out yet. Otherwise it looks perfect to me!
  • Input can now be configured from the emu. Press Input to bring up the Input List, double-click on an input, and press a new key, joystick/pad direction or joystick/pad button for it. Note that if you playing the Sega games, you can't use this to configure analog controls yet - you will have to edit the game's .INI file still. Also, you will have to edit the games .INI file to set dip switches and region codes.
  • Added a layer switch for CPS games (Alt-L). Press to toggle background layers on or off. You can use this to show only the sprites.
  • Fixed the Victor lariat 'teleport' bug, which was caused by being able to press left and right at the same time. (Of course you can't do this on the original arcade, but if you could, the bug would probably happen there as well!)
  • Fixed some Triple Buffering problems.
  • Refined the sprite priority patch so it only modifies sprites when absolutely necessary, and also added the other priority levels. Tiny little fixes: the blue flame and picture on Dem's stage is fixed, and the bats now *don't* fly over the red cave on Morrigan's level in VSav (which is the way it is in the arcade).
  • Rowscroll also fixed (it used to created a bit of a glitch at the bottom of the Iron Horse Iron Terror stage as the train scrolled on)

David Raingeard released Calice v0.0.3a which adds support for Strider and Willow (Jpn). I'll add the emulator to SYS2064 as soon as I got enough time to test it. Thanks to Ben-J for the news!

How about a couple of MAME WIP news to start the day? :-)

Note however that some games use more cpu power than others for sound (light bringer seems to be the slower one for now). But we are still working on it, and we expect to improve things before february ! (who said it was impossible to have sound in f3 games at 60 fps on a P2-400 ???)

Dave released Final Burn v0.078 which "fixes a very large bug in the way QSound sample data was read! All the drum problems are now fixed (e.g. Lei-Lei's music, Morrigan's winning theme), and voice samples are a lot clearer (e.g. Lilith's "Shining Blade")."

[-Big_W-] noticed that there are important arcade features that are completely missing from *every* arcade emulator to recapture the correct arcade feeling at home. Be sure to read his message and I bet you'll agree, too. :-)

I really doubt that this campaign will work to raise the grotesque amount of money needed to buy two rare arcade games but it would be nice to finally see Marble Man in emulation.

Oops, I fixed the download link for Final Burn v0.076! Many thanks Pete!

Modeler WIP news: Take a look at Impactemu.com for a recent screenshot of Golden Axe 2 with correct colors and you can read more interesting Modeler news in this messageboard thread, too. Thanks to Prophet for the messageboard link!

Modeler v0.0.5 was released with very preliminary support for three Sega Model One games: Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter and Star Wars. Unfortunately the games are not playable due to lack of 3d graphics and the System 32 emulation was disabled in this release so be sure to keep v0.0.4 as well.

  • Fixed the pitch of the QSound.

v0.064

  • Made it so that the top panel not only isn't shown but isn't even created in fullscreen mode. Does this fix the bug where people hear "windows beep noises" in fullscreen? Please let me know!
  • Changed Fast Forward key to F4

  Friday, 05. January 2001

[JJ] told me about another interview with a classic arcade game programmer. This time GoodDealGames interviewed Jeff Lee, the creator of Q*Bert.

Dave is back to his old release schedule and released two new versions of Final Burn. The latest version is Final Burn v0.063 and in addition to added QSound emulation we get:

v0.063

  • There was a bug affecting mainly Hot Rod joystick users where the System Menu could pop up even in fullscreen - this is now fixed.

v0.062

  • Added QSound emulation. Street Fighter Zero (CPS2 version) now has sound. Isn't perfect - some strange sounds are played sometimes.
  • Sounds fairly good though - give it a try!
