Impressive ain't it ? Read the whole interview here!

26. March 1998

  • JROK has got 'Pac Land' (Namco, 1984) running for his multi-game emulator JAS! He wants to release the new version on April, 4th and has posted some screenshots here!

A very big Thank You to all my visitors in the last months - be sure to come back and bring your friends :-) !

23. March 1998

  • Read a very short interview with Janne Korpela and Anders Nilsson (of RAGE fame) on this page!

  • Today I started to do some improvements on this page which will continue over the next few weeks, so expect minor changes in the next days!

22. March 1998

  • Kevin Brisley released a 'preview' version of the upcoming Replay+ supporting the following games: Amidar, Bump'n Jump, Burger Time, Super Pacman and Robocop!!! The preview version is for Linux users ONLY but Dos and Windows95 ports will be available in a week or two! Check the latest news on the official Replay+ homepage and get the 'preview' from there, too!

  • More news from the MAME WIP page!

Bryan McPhail has seven Data East games (Bad Dudes, Dragonninja, Robocop, Hippodrome, Heavy Barrel, Sly Spy and Midnight Resistance) nearly done 100% for MAME but there is no sound yet! Paul Leaman has improved the Trojan driver, too!

21. March 1998

  • I nearly forgot to tell you about the first screenshot from the upcoming Retrocade! It's from 'Discs of Tron' and the game never looked better :)! Click here to see the image! If the Retrocade page is down, go to Insert Coin to see the image!

  • The MAME WIP page has been updated with screenshots for the game 'Fast Freddy' (Atari, 1982)! Zsolt Vasvari has been busy, too and added a real classic from Atari 1976: 'Cops N Robbers'!

19. March 1998

  • I'd like to start with some non-computer related news! My favorite Soccer team, the current World Champion BORUSSIA DORTMUND just beat the all-time loosers :-) FC Bayern Muenchen and is again Germany's only team in the Champions-League semi-finals! Congratulations on the job well done! :-)

    • Player 2 controls now work.
    • Added a menu interface for setting the dipswitches.
    • Fixed a problem with the highscore saving.

  • MAME additions: Nicola Salmoria ´has added support for 'Blockout' (Technos, 1989) and Paul Leaman added a playable, yet preliminary driver for 'Trojan' (Capcom, 1985)! Take a look at the MAME WIP page for screenshots!

  • It's back to the old background which I like better...I am going to make new buttons and improve the page graphically over the next days. Stay tuned and feel free to send me comments on the design!

    • Improved define-keys option: now you can use CTRL, ALT, and so on.
    • Added high-score saving.

11. March 1998

  • MGE-Author Neill Corlett has posted a message on Dave's Arcade Message Board to give some details about the current status of MGE! The emulator doesn't make that much progress because of a) the slapstic protection, b) the core is being completely rewritten and c) not enough free time on Neil's part! Read the whole message here!

10. March 1998

  • Steven Frew released Slutte! v2.0! Here's what's new:

    • Ahab version (as of this version, all revisions of Slutte! will be named after famous Captains).
    • Eliminated the irritating 1-pixel offset playfield glitches.
    • Made the text graphics more accurate (bonus-scores at ends of the levels use the correct character set now).
    • Previously-bugged graphics such as the moving robot-limbs and the elevator now work a lot better. This is due to the addition of some (very basic) scroll-layer prioritisation.
    • Improved the palette updating. Now the -puff command line option is unneccessary. Thanks to Jason Fourier for this suggestion.
    • Mode-X support added, eliminating the need for a VESA 2.0 driver.
    • Rewrote the file routines in an effort to make it work in DOS 6.22 (though I can't test it, so fingers crossed).
    • Added a joystick calibration option.
    • Added screen-grab function.

09. March 1998

  • Again I present you System16 news:

Another game has been added 'Tough Turf' (Datsu Electronics, 1989)!

  • Surprises ahead: Rage will support two previously unannounced games in the upcoming version: Blade Master (IREM, 1991) and Gunforce (IREM, 1991)! Click here for screenshots!

  • It seems that Raine will be the multigame emulator that supports Wrestlefest! Read about it on Emulation Happenings!

07. March 1998

  • Insert Coin announced that 'Punch Out' will be playable in MAME v0.31!! Take a look at this screenshot! In addition to that you may already know that 'Speed Rumbler' will be in v.31 too but you can see screenshots here!

  • More mouth-watering screenshots of upcoming games: This time you can take a look at 'Undercover Cops' running on Rage!

06. March 1998

  • The great Super Nintendo emulator SNES9x is going to be continued and has made some awesome progress like the emulation of the Super FX chip!! Read all about it here! I know that this has nothing to do with arcade emulation, but it is great news nevertheless!

  • Getting back to Arcade related news: Thierry and Noa added another game to their System16 emulator: E-Swat! Here's a screenshot!

  • Another new emulator in the works: this time for Konami's 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'! Take a look at the homepage now :-)

05. March 1998

  • The New York Times did a wonderful article about MAME, read it here!

  • Jose Tejada Gomez Frew released Grytra v0.1! The author of Mapefer strikes again with a single-game emulator for the game 'Gryzor' or 'Contra'!

This emulator is a prerelease, too, so please don't expect that the emulation is 100% complete.

  • Data East emulator news:

There are some new screenshots on the homepage with correct colors and Bad Dudes should be playable. The emu is not released yet, though!

  • I finally found the time to split the single-game emulator section into two sections...In the next days I will start to update all the emulator descriptions. Please tell me of any broken links you may find while browsing through SYS2064. And of course, thank you for visiting! :-)

04. March 1998

  • Steven Frew released Slutte! v1.0, a single-game emulator for Capcomc's classic: 'Bionic Commando'!

Please keep in mind that this is the first release and that there are still bugs in the code.

  • There are new screenshots from the emulation of the game 'Wrestlefest' and they look great. We might see the release soon. If you'd like to get the roms for the game, take a look at this page!

03. March 1998

  • Dave Spicer released Sparcade v2.23! The new features are:

    • 3 versions of Slapfight supported
      - bootleg (same version as in Sparcade v2.22)
      - original
      - US original, entitled "Alcon".
    • Commando frame skip bugs fixed.
    • Centipede scanlines bug fixed.
    • Wardner game options fixed.

02. March 1998

  • Arcade emulator work in progress news:

Emulation Happenings posted some screenshots of the game Wrestlefest (Technos, 1991) which are supposed to be from a multigame emulator! In addition to that, Raine seems to make some more progress, too. The author has posted some new screenshots from previously non-working games: Snow Bros., Terra Force and Toki.

  • Dave Spicer released a new .rat-file for the game Wardner for his Sparcade emulator which fixes some bugs!

  • With respect to all awards that SYS2064 previously recieved and due to the fact that i am a huge Simpsons fan, I am very honored to recieve this brand-new award which is the coolest I have ever seen: the First Annual Montgomery Burns Award For Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence!

    Burns Award

01. March 1998

  • Finally! After more than a year without updates, I am proud to announce the return of the emulator that started it all: Dave Spicer just released Sparcade v2.2!

The new version now works with Windows95 so there is no need to switch to plain DOS and the new supported games are: Berzerk, Bombjack, Commando, Domino Man, Jr Pacman, Millipede, Moon Cresta, Nemesis, Salamander, Satan's Hollow, Slap Fight, Super Cobra, Tazmania, Terra Cresta, Tron, Turtles, Tutankham, Uniwars, Vulcan Venture and Wardner.

  • The next release of the System16 emulator will support the game: "Dynamite Dux" with sound in addition to the previously mentioned games "SDI" and "Passing Shot". See the screenshots here!

  • SYS2064 has won another award: the Web Surfers Digest Hot Site!

    WSD award

February 1998

27. February 1998

  • Peter Hirschberg released his Vector Dream emulator v1.0!

Currently supported are three games: Asteroids Deluxe, Asteroids and Lunar Lander! Vector Dreams has some unique features, so check it out!

26. February 1998

  • Brad Oliver, the coordinator of the Mac port of MAME has started an official MAME Work in Progress page!! Take a look on it from time to time and read about the latest MAME informations!

24. February 1998

  • The System16 emulator supports yet another game: "Passing Shot". You can see some screenshots here. Passing Shot and SDI, a game added a few days earlier, are both playable with sound :-)

  • Two new arcade emulators are currently under development:

The first strives to become an emulator for Data East games like Robocop and Bad Dudes and the second is a work in progress of a single game emulator called "Slutte" (by Steven Frew) for the game Bionic Commando (Capcom, 1987). Click on the links to see the homepages and some screenshots.

23. February 1998

  • Nicola Salmoria has posted a message on Dave's MAME Message Board regarding everything about the situation on MAME. Hopefully this will crush the pointless discussions on the message boards.

  • Dave Ewing has started an online emulation news-megazine called EMUzing :-) Issue number One is now available and it is a great read. This issues featured interview is with Neil Bradley who gives some insight in Retrocade!

  • Bester has released a Xain'D Sleena emulator! The emulator is in very early alpha stage and has the following problems:

    • The game is slow.
    • Colors are not all correct.
    • The game will lock up randomly.
    • There is no Joystick.
    • There is no sound.

The emulation is painfully slow on my P100, so I wouldn't really recommend it right now. If you think your computer can handle this, try it for yourself!

  • I will devide the Single-Game Emulator section as soon as I find the time for it ;-)

22. February 1998 - A very busy day!

  • There is a lot of speculation going on on Dave's Message Boards about the closures of AH and the MacMame page which is really getting ridiculous. To end all of those unmature discussions, please read this post by Brad Oliver, the developer of MacMame regarding those rumours.

The following is my opinion: I don't understand the whole situation. Just imagine...there are people who take a gift! from emu-developers (especially MAME) and all they seem to care about is bitching :-( ... Why can't they just enjoy what they get and say 'thank you' for those great products ? Different emulator programmers simply have different views about their products. Some of them like to show the progress of their emulators to the public, some of them like to work in secrecy and surprise everybody with the emu-release. How dare some people to tell the programmers what they should do ? After all, they do all the work and use up a lot of their sparetime and therefore they can set *all* the rules! Those who don't like the rules that come with the emulators should start their own projects or simply stay away from those emulators.

  • What is the best thing to start into a new day ? The debut of a brand-new emulator, of course!

Brian Peek has released Annoid v1.0, an emulator for Taito's classic game Arkanoid!

  • And there is even more :-) Dave Spicer made an official announcement on Dave's Arcade Board regarding the upcoming Sparcade!

"A new version of Sparcade will be released this week, possibly as early as tommorrow. The following titles will definately be supported:
Amidar, Berzerk, Bombjack, Centipede, Commando, Domino Man, Frogger, Galaxian, Hangly Man, Junior Pacman, Lunar Rescue, Millipede, Moon Cresta, Ms Pacman, Nemesis, Pacman, Pengo, Pisces, Salamander, Satan's Hollow, Scramble, Slap Fight, Space Attack, Space Invaders, Space Invaders Deluxe (aka Space Invaders pt II), Starforce, Super Cobra, Tazmania, The End, Tron, Turtles, Tutankham, Uniwars, Wardner, War of the Bugs, Vulcan Venture.
I may also include "work in progress" versions of some of the following: Bad Dudes, Birdie Try, Flying Shark, Rainbow islands, R-Type, Terra Cresta."

    Sound great, doesn't it ? :-))

  • There are sad news, too:

Two great arcade emulation sites have just shut down: Knapers MacMame page and Athmospherical Heights :-( You can take a look at their 'good-bye' speeches on the pages.

Both pages provided valuable information in the past and I am sorry to see them go!

  • The System16 emulator has added a new game: "SDI", (unplayable right now)! Take a look at screenshots here and remember that there is no release date yet!

21. February 1998

  • Dirk Stevens released MamEagle v0.10!

Due to my decision not to support any! unofficial versions of existing emulators, I won't add Mameagle to this page. You can download it here, I didn't test it yet, though.

  • I added a really promising page to the links-section: The site is simply called NeoGeo Emu and the purpose is to cover everything about the NeoGeo, including emulators (no there is NO working NeoGeo emulator, yet) and even has some NeoGeo roms to download!

19. February 1998

  • RAGE news :-)

You can see a screenshot of a working 'Image Fight' (IREM, 1988) on the Rage Homepage. So we might see a new release soon!

  • It looks like Eagle is for real after all. The author sent a beta-version of a modified MAME version with Eagle support to Lance McKay, the maintainer of Emu Xpress. Eagle is not code-optimized yet, so expect a big performance cut.

18. February 1998

  • MSNBC did a very nice article about MAME, you really should read it here. There are some faults, though: MAME is freeware!!, not shareware and the game 'Tank' is not yet supported.

17. February 1998

  • The author of Eagle has added more screen-shots from three different games: Bubble Bobble, Bomb Jack and Out Run. I was very sceptical about Eagle, but now I really think that it is a scam. What do you think ?

16. February 1998

  • Take a look at EAGLE: Enhance Arcade Graphics Library! Dirk Stevens thought of something to improve the graphics of classic arcade games and the result looks interesting! You can see some screenshots on his page and he says that EAGLE will be added to a 'well-known emulator' very soon!

  • Larry Bank released CAGE v1.02!

    The new features are:

    • Fixed screen dump to work in properly with all games and in hicolor/truecolor mode and stretched mode.
    • Fixed hiscore/state save for Defender, Robotron.
    • Fixed mysterious GPF when viewing some game's options.
    • Added ROM information dialog to show directory name and ROM file names.
    • Added support for Space Invaders, Space Invaders Part II, Galaxy Wars, Lunar escue, Qix.
    • Improved keyboard definition dialog.
    • Fixed some memory leaks.
    • Improved speed of 6808 and 6809 emulation dramatically.

15. February 1998

  • The best news are news about new emulators :-)

According to Dave's Classics, José Tejada Gómez (the author of Mapefer) is busy working on a Gryzor/Contra emulator which could be released soon! You can see some screenshots here.

  • Richard Bush (J3d!) released a Raine v0.8!

With this release I add Raine to the multigame emulators because now my matrox mystique finally works due to a second videomode Richard added to the emulator. Please note that this release of Raine is still very "beta" and all of the games are more or less bugged. I don't consider any of the games playable right now with the exception of Rastan.

  • WOW...SYS2064 reached the 15.000 hits barrier...Now I say: "To Infinity and beyond!" :-)

14. February 1998

  • Insert Coin has the first big list of games that are supposed to be supported by MAME v0.31:

"Bandido, Boot Hill, Capcom Bowling, City Connection, Crash, Far West, Frisky Tom, Guzzler, Hamburger, Killer Comet, Mania Challenge, Mega Attack, Rygar, Speed Rumber, Sprint 1, Star Fire (MSK), Super Breakout, Super Qix, and Tazmania. Also reported are more supported versions of: Arkanoid, Frogger, Pleiads and Venture."

  • Here are two new and great Rom-Dump sites for you to find replacement roms for your broken original rom-boards ;-)

Arcade Roms from Japan; as the name indicates, here you find japanese rom-dumps (most of them not supported by emulators yet) and a nameless ftp-site on which you can find a lot of not-yet-emulated romdumps (unsorted).

13. February 1998

12. February 1998

  • Anders Nilsson and Janne Korpela release Rage v0.8!

    The new features are:

    • Legend of Hero Tonma
    • Bugfixed version of Hammerin' Harry (still no sound thou)

  • Chris Hardy released his Juno First Emulator v1.23!

    The new features are:

    • Added sound (via samples) for Legend of Hero Tonma.
    • Missing sprites fixed. This was due to incorrectly read roms. You will need to download the new set of roms to fix this.

10. February 1998

  • Have you heard about 'Retrocade' yet ?

There has been a lot of speculation about a new arcade emulator called Retrocade and all I was able to find out is that Neil Bradley (of EMU fame), Mike Cuddy (KEM mastermind) and Zonn Moore (Cinemu chef de maison) have banded together to do a new multi-game emulator which should run the games great even on pre-pentium machines! :-)

Now there is finally some proof for all of this. Neil Bradley posted a message on Dave's arcade emulation board from which I will quote some extracts here:

"It [Retrocade] incorporates the same games as KEM and EMU with the addition of the Cinematronics games and quite a few others. Count on roughly 50 games to start with, and more as the emulator matures."
"BTW, Star Wars is in there as well with full sound and speech. It ran nicely on my friend's P100 with sound enabled, and runs quite well on my P60 as well."

Doesn't this sound great ? :-) Read the full message here!

  • Chris Hardy released Juno First Emulator v1.22!

Now with support for the game Legend of Hero Tonma!

  • Somebody (J3d?) released Raine (Rainbow Islands Emulator) v0.06!

Raine is supposed to be a very-early release of a multi-game emulator. Almost none of the games are playable yet. I can't seem to get it to run, because there is only one video-mode supported. If you want to take a look at it, I will add it as soon as I can see what it does and what is missing, so if you need it right now, I suggest that you download it from Dave.

29. January 1998

  • Directly from JROK's homepage comes the following information:

"JAS-Multi games is almost ready for release, my own deadline is to have it ready on Saturday Jan 31st, so far it supports Gaplus & Galaga 3, Mappy, Super Pacman, Dig Dug2 and Sky Kid."

  • Chris Hardy released another bug-fix to v1.21b for his Juno First emulator. Joystick support back for RType I and II. Please note that the filename still is jnupd121.zip!

28. January 1998

  • Chris Hardy released a second bug-fix today :) to v1.21a for his Juno First emulator Now the emulator supports the US R-Type I romset. Please note that the filename still is jnupd121.zip!

  • Chris Hardy released a bug-fix (v1.21) for his Juno First emulator a few hours later. These bugs were fixed:

    • RType II's elevator bug is fixed
    • Track'n'Field is no longer slower than the previous release
    • RType I has proper dipswitch settings

27. January 1998

  • Anders Nilsson and Janne Korpela release a Rage-bugfix: Rage v0.6b. The new features are:

    • F8 to toggle between the old(360x256) resolution and the new(384x256) for all Rtypes
    • Sound is now working on AWE32 and some other cards that had problems before

    • New resolution for all Rtypes, 384x256
    • Correct colors in Victory Road
    • Option -v now enables v-sync (disabled is default)
    • F11 shows current framerate
    • F10 does not show framerate automatically

On their homepage they list a few new games to be under development. My guesses are: Dragon Breed, In the Hunt, Legend of Hero Tonma, R-Type Leo, Speed Rumbler, Trojan and Undercover Cops. :-)

    • Save and Load the current game state in RType I and II
    • Sound support for RType II via samples which came from a real RType II board. Unfortunately due to the size of the music samples they have been omitted from this release. A future version will have native YM2151 support and won't require the samples

24. January 1998

  • Cabbe and Org's Romlist page is back up (no roms yet) with a new look and on a new location, so update your bookmarks.

  • There are two Netstat counters up there for a short while, because I am testing the brand-new German Netstat :-)) Unfortunately the German version is still in beta-test, so I keep the Dutch-counter as long as the beta-tests are running :-)

23. January 1998

  • I am deadly ill *g* and there are no real news out there...bad luck it seems ;-)
But I'd like to take the time and place to say thank you to all of you who wrote those encouraging emails in the last weeks. I will improve SYS2064 continuously and hope that you all will find at least one reason to came back often and check for all your arcade-emulation needs. Again thank you for the kind words and take care!

  • Did I just say no news ? hmmm ;-) To quote from Dave's Arcade Message Board:

Dave Spicer: "Yup, you're right - the new Sparcade won't even come close to Mame's numbers, supporting as it does around 30 odd titles. What I've tried to do is provide quality emulations of some of my favourite games. Three titles in particular really make the emu as far as I'm concerned."
There are even more posts from Dave Spicer regarding the upcoming Sparcade, so i suggest you all take a look for yourself.

21. January 1998

  • Blood found a nasty bug in FeMAME 1.72 and released the bug-fixed FeMAME 1.73.

20. January 1998

  • The last version (1.95b) of Sparcade was released on January, 25th 1997. He released the update-pack with the Starforce.rat file on February, 11th 1997. Maybe Dave Spicer wants to release the new version exactly one year later...I guess we all have to sit and wait :-)

  • Roberto Venture released Vastar 0.51 which obviously emulates the game Vastar ;-)

The emulator has no sound yet, but is much faster and has more accurate colors than the MAME version.

  • Another game has been added to the upcoming release of the System16 emulator...TETRIS, the Sega version!!!! Click here to see some screenshots.

18. January 1998

  • If this ain't good news: I just saw this update on the Sparcade homepage:

"The Sparcade page is down for the time being. Watch this space for a new page and a new version of Sparcade in the near future."

Remember...you read it here first :-)

  • Paolo Faccini and Paolo Medda released Callus Manager 95 v1.03 a few days ago. It is just a minor bug-fix though.

02. January 1998

  • The unjustly neglected Replay emulator will have an update soon: This is a *must* read!!!

Kevin Brisley is currently rewriting the core and is creating Replay+ which will be a slight step back regarding supported games but will have major improvements over most existing emulators. Directly from the authors homepage:

    • The framework has been rewritten in C++ to allow flexibility and extensibility. This makes new drivers easy to add and allows similar drivers to share code through inheritance (Done).
    • Source code will be publically available.
    • Integrated debugger available in a development version for driver writing (In Progress).
    • A nice new builtin Front-End (Done).
    • Easily portable to such platforms as DOS (Soon), Unix/X (Done), Win32 (Soon), Macintosh (Not yet planned).
    • Support for ASM CPU cores for speed in Linux/X (Done), DOS (Soon) and Win32 (Soon).
    • 68000 CPU support with C/ASM cores in (In progress).
    • Cocktail mode support for all games (Done).
    • Allows startup & in-game rotating/flipping of the screen (Done).
    • Games can be added without recompiling Replay+ through shared libraries in Unix/X (Done) and .DLLs in Win32 (Soon).
    • Game state save/load in all games (Done).
    • Dip Switch setting/saving (Done).
    • Allows setting of global key definitions (e.g. set the "Player 1 Up" key for all games) which can also be overridden by local key definitions. All definitions saved (Done).
    • 16/24 Bit Unix/X support (Done).
    • Movie capture and playback for all games. Turn on the recording of your game and play the movie back later. Trade with your friends ;-) (Done).
