December 1997

31. Dezember 1997

  • Say good-bye to the year 1997 and give a heartly welcome to 1998...

1997 has been the year of emulation! I never thought about the possibility to see arcade games from the 199x to be emulated so soon, but Callus proved me wrong.
If someone told you one year ago that Super Nintendo emulation with sound would be possible, you would have called him a dreamer...then there was SNES9x ;-)
Emulation of 'classic' systems and computers is nearly perfect and great emulators were released for the '16-bit' console systems (Magic Engine, Sega Genesis/MegaDrive, Super Nintendo) and even the first promising steps at high-end-console emulation were done (PSX, N64)
Last but definetly not least, 1997 will be known as the MAME-year :-) A small, one-man project soon became the emulator of the year (if not the decade)...You can only try to guess what 1998 will bring for MAME... :-)

I'd like to thank all programmers and supporters of the emulation-society for your work and your efforts and for creating some real masterpieces :-)

  • btw: Just how soon is "very soon" ? ;-)

  • If you happen to be visitor 10.000, please let me know and a screenshot would be nice :-)

29. Dezember 1997

  • While I am still waiting for MAME v0.30, I added a list of all currently emulated Video-Games complete with the manufacturer, the release date and the emulator that runs it. This list will always be updated, so if you are looking for a special game, try this list first before mailing :-)

28. Dezember 1997

  • No new emulator, but at a news update: the Sega System 16 emulator has just added a new game: Super Hang-On.
It is not playable yet and there is no release date set...but click here for some screenshots :-)

27. Dezember 1997

  • Let's face it...this christmas sucked regarding Emulation and Arcade Emulation especially... :-(

25. Dezember 1997

  • Looks like MAME v0.30 will rock ya :-)

From what I hear on IRC and see on the various homepages the next MAME will be a true milestone! Rumoured are more than 70 (some even mention more than 80) new supported games (including clones and variants) and major improvements on existing drivers...Release date could be any day now, it seems that the new version was delayed because of broken drivers that were suddenly discovered...

24. Dezember 1997

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!! :-)

  • Paolo Faccini and Paolo Medda release Callus Manager 95 v1.02. Some bug fixes were implemented.

  • JROK postponed his multi-game emulator (the merge of his single-game emulators Dig Dug2, Gaplus, Mappy, Super Pacman and the addition of Sky Kid) to early 1998. He says that the emulation of Sky Kid is 98% finished and the emulator will be released as soon as he fixes the few remaining bugs.

  • Phil Stroffolino released a brand-new Shaolin's Road emulator for the Power Macintosh. I don't own a Mac so I can't tell you more about it. Take a look for yourself. He also did a Rygar and a Yie Ar Kung-Fu emulator for the Mac!

If you own a Mac and would like to contribute with emu-reviews and screenshots, please feel free to contact me!

23. Dezember 1997

  • Arghhh...no MAME yesterday...again :(

As much as I like more and more drivers and fixes added, I'd like to see the new MAME right now...Lets hope for a chrismas release now...

  • I added Callus Manager 95 v1.01 by Paolo Faccini and Paolo Medda. It's a very nice looking and easy to use Windows95 based frontend for Callus. The newest version supports zipped rom-images!!!

  • Quite some time ago, Ian Pleasance released MAMEaud v1.35 ;-) This programm is a real must-have for all MAME users. It compares the list of needed files ( roms ans samples) with all the files you have and lists all files that are missing, those that are not needed and and and...Quite helpful with more then 250 supported games...

21. Dezember 1997

  • No arcade-emulation news today...go and play Diablo Hellfire instead :)

  • Will tomorrow finally be MAMEday ? hmmm...some people say yes, some say it won't be released before the 25th of Dezember...

18. Dezember 1997

  • Janne Korpela and Anders Nilsson release RAGE v0.5b!

The fixes are: Lower memory requirements and Highscore-save for R-Type!

17. Dezember 1997

  • WOW...the first christmas present has arrived!

  • Janne Korpela and Anders Nilsson release RAGE v0.5!

Two new games: Son Son and ...R-TYPE... :)))) Yes...finally someone emulates my alltime favorite shooter! Thank you Anders and Janne!

  • News on the Juno First emulator:

Chris Hardy put the development of his R-Type I and II emulator on hold to finish the MAME-driver for Track and Field...Judging the R-Type I and II screenshots on his homepage, the emulator looks fine...he mentions a nasty bug though that prevents the emulator from being released...

16. Dezember 1997

  • As you might have noticed, no new MAME yesterday... :(

  • Thank you for your continued support, I hope the first real milestone 10000 hits will soon be reality!

15. Dezember 1997

  • So?! Will today be MAME-day?
Some people say yes, some say no...I believe we just have to sit and wait...but from what I heard, the next version will blow you away!

  • Could the Sparcade rumour be true? Will we see a new version of the emulator that started the whole arcade-emulation craze? hmmm....

  • KEM-news: KEM will support Root-Beer Tapper (looks like a variant of the already supported Tapper) in the upcoming version

  • The next version of the Sega System 16 emulator will be released when sound-support is finished...

  • Last but not least, JROK is working on merging all of his single-game emulators into a multigame emulator which should be released soon! In addition he is working on a Sky Kid (Namco, 1985) emulator which he tries to release before christmas!

12. Dezember 1997

  • Same procedure as the last days: no new emulators today... :(

  • I believe that MAME v0.30 will be released this monday/tuesday since some sites have already started to release screenshots from their beta-versions...Keep your fingers crossed!

09. Dezember 1997

  • Nothing really new today... :(

  • I am testing some Callus front-ends today and will add my favorite one soon...

07. Dezember 1997

  • Finally...after two endless weeks without emulator-releases, Neil Bradley, the author of the multi-game emulator EMU strikes back with his Major Havoc emulator v1.0!
The emulator features full sound, joystick support and highscore saving.

  • NeoGeo emulator ???
According to Emu-News-Service a 'well-known' emulator-author, who wants to remain anonymous for the moment, has started to develop a NeoGeo emulator an has the 68000 core done. He is now looking for all kind of information regarding the NeoGeo: neooge@hotmail.com

06. Dezember 1997

  • New confirmed MAME-additions:

In addition to the previously announced supported roms the following games will be supported by MAME v0.30!:
Astro Fighter, Circus Charlie, Colony 7, Hyper Sports, Make Trax, Mat Mania and Rock'n Rope...preliminary support also for Quantum! :)

05. Dezember 1997

  • Still no new emulators... :( ...but:
  • All you Callus fans should be able to find (try Cabbe and Orgs site) the following, YET UNSUPPORTED, rom-images that MAY be included in the next version:
1941 (us), Block Block, Caddillacs and Dinosaurs, Ghouls and Ghosts, Mercs, Punisher, Slammasters and Warriors of Fate!
I suggest you go and grab them now, because every site will be crowded when the next version is released...

In addition to the Capcom roms, Cabbe and Org dumped a lot of other arcade roms, too. All aspiring arcade-emulator programmers MUST take a look! :)

03. Dezember 1997

  • It seems that all arcade emulator authors are going to hold back the updates for a later (perhaps christmas) release... :-( Let's wait and see...

  • All you Callus fans should be able to find the following, YET UNSUPPORTED, rom-images that MAY be included in the next version:
1941 (us), Block Block, Caddillacs and Dinosaurs, Ghouls and Ghosts, Mercs, Punisher, Slammmasters and Warriors of Fate!
I suggest you go and grab them now, because every site will be crowded when the next version is released...

November 1997

30. November 1997

  • No real arcade news today :-(

Some people released a modified MAME version with limited music support for Phoenix and Bubble Bobble... I don't think that Team MAME is going to be pleased about that...Even if it would work 100% they shouldn't have released it, but should have sent it to them to implement it in one of the next versions of MAME...

29. November 1997

  • This might be just a rumour, but what if it were true?

According to Emu-Xpress, Dave Spicer's Sparcade is still under development and might have support for some 68000-games like Nemesis and the Sega Megadrive/Genesis! :-)

Please keep in mind that this is a unconfirmed rumour!!!

28. November 1997

  • I added the URL to Cabbe and Org's Romlist-Page to the Links!

On their page they list hundreds of arcade games that they have access to. While this doesn't mean that all those roms have been dumped yet, it is possible for aspiring emulator programmers to request roms from the list! The arcade emulation future looks real bright! :-)

27. November 1997

  • My provider is doing some fixes on their servers, so it might be that I can't access the internet for the weekend :-(

26. November 1997

  • More and more MAME v0.30 news are arriving!

This time, the news come from Atmospherical Heights and mention the following games supported by MAME v0.30:
005, Astro Blaster, Bump 'n Jump, Circus, Food Fight, Frenzy, Gauntlet, Gauntlet 2, Monster Bash, Pinball Action, Radarscope, Robot Bowl, Space Odyssey, Super Zaxxon, Swimmer, Track'n'Field and Traverse USA.
In addition there is preliminary support for: Arkanoid, Exerion, Future Spy and Major Havoc!

This gives us a total of 17 (+4) new and confirmed games amoung them Gauntlet I and II (I love those games!)! Take the usual surprises and the clones/bootlegs and the 300 supported games could really be reached! :-)

24. November 1997

  • You might wonder about MAME v0.30!

While there's still no release date set, according to Dave's Classics, the next version will be a real biggie :-)
The new games should include: Bump N Jump, Food Fight, Frenzy, Super Zaxxon, Track'n'Field (and then I bet the following Konami games, too: Circus Charlie, Hyper Sports, Juno First and Rock'n' Rope) and Traverse USA. It might be that v0.30 emulates more then 300 games!!!
In addition we will get sound- and colorfixes and highscore saving in a lot of already supported games as sound support in Yie Ar Kung Fu and color fixes for GunSmoke!

  • I changed the layout for the news and rewrote the introduction...I hope you like it...

22. November 1997

  • JROK updated his Gaplus emulator to v1.40!

Save/Load function was added and a bug-fix regarding the AWE32 soundcard!

  • What's the best thing about the recent Callus craze?

I have to admit, I like Callus, but I love MAME :-) So, in my opinion, the best thing about Callus (apart from emulating Captain Commando, of course) is the fact, that it created a little diversion from MAME and thus giving 'Team MAME' time to breathe and to spent on the development of MAME v0.30!

I expect MAME v0.30 to be released around christmas :-))

21. November 1997

  • Brian Levine released Rockulator v0.98a!

This is a minor update with bug-fixes and a few added games: Son Son, Tutankham and Vulgus.

18. November 1997

  • These rumours might fuel the Callus fire!

The following CPS-1 roms have been dumped and might be supported soon: Mercs, Muscle Bomber Duo, Nemo, Warriors of Fate and my alltime favorite: Cadillacs And Dinosaurs - which I just played in my local arcade two weeks ago! :)

17. November 1997

  • Bloodlust strike again with Callus v0.23!

The dust over the last version hasn't even settled and yet we get a new release of the great Callus emulator!
This time 7! new games were added: 1941 (jap), Knights of the Round, Magic Sword, MegaTwins, Rockman PowerBattle (jap), Street Fighter II and Willow!
In addition support was added for King of Dragons (jap) and Carrier AirWing (us).

Asteroids, Dig Dug2, Mappy, Missile Command, Pengo and Super PacMan!

12. November 1997

  • Bloodlust just released Callus v0.22!

Wow! Thanks to Bloodlust and those hard-working rom-dumpers, we all can now enjoy the following new additions to Callus:
    - 3 all new games: Captain Commando, King of Dragons and Three Wonders
    - 4 new japanese versions: Area 88 (jap. UN Squadron), Captain Commando, Final Fight and Strider
    - Carrier AirWing is now fixed
    - support for tweaked video mode (384x224) and
    - of course bugfixes and speed-ups :)

11. November 1997

  • Callus-Fans watch out!

Even more Capcom System One roms have been dumped:
Block Block, Carrier Air Wing (English), Captain Commando, King Of Dragons, Knights Of the Round, Magic Sword, Mega Twins, Street Fighter II, SlamMasters, Varth and Willow!

Please note that none of those games are already supported ! They are just possible games for the next releases of Callus now that the roms are available!

  • Brian Levine released Rockulator v0.98!

Two new CPU-emulators were added: Multi Z80 and Multi-6809!
A few more games were added too: Phoenix, Pleiades, 1942 and Yie Ar Kung-Fu.

  • Two new emulators were released during the last days!

A Multi-Space-Invaders emulator and a new Phoenix-emulator...since all those games are already emulated by some of the featured multigame-emulators here, I am not sure if I will add them to my site...

09. November 1997

Wait patiently for new releases and when they are released, enjoy them !
