September 1998

Wednesday, 30. September 1998

  • Dave released an update for his DTMNT emulator v0.52! Some sound bug-fixes were done!

Tuesday, 29. September 1998

Monday, 28. September 1998

  • I just need to complain about the lack of updates and here's a new NeoGeo rom straight from Romlist: 'Stakes Winner'! I don't know what kind of game this is but according to Org it is no fighting game :))! As usual, the List of released NeoGeo roms has been updated, too!

  • Very slow day for arcade emulation sofar...if you like realaudio shows you can 'put an ear' :) on these two shows which cover the latest developments in arcade emulation:
    RetroRadio from Insert Coin and
    EmuStation from Emulators Unlimited!

Sunday, 27. September 1998

  • Two more NeoGeo roms were released: Romlist release 'Tecmo World Soccer 96' and NeoCharity release another fighting game called 'Last Blade'

  • JoseQ of EmuViews interviewed Mirco Buffoni (MAME)! Read the interview here!

Saturday, 26. September 1998

  • Nao, the current developer of the System16 emulator, releases a new emulator: M72 Emulator v0.20b! It currently runs 5 IREM games with sound: R-Type Jap, Legend of Hero Tonma, Ninja Spirit, Battle Chopper and Image Fight.

  • Cristobal Aguilera and Luis Miguel Dominguez release a new NeoGeo emulator called NeoGem v0.001beta! It is quite impressive for a first release as it It should run more then 40 NeoGeo games! It still lacks some speedup and has some graphics problems (zoom and background) and has no sound. On their homepage you can get a NeoCD emulator, too, but it doesn't run any games yet!

Friday, 25. September 1998

  • MAME32 v0.34 beta3 is now available! This is the official version and not the hack by Videoman! Thanks to John Hardy IV (MAME32 Q&A Department) for the mail!

  • Dave released DTMNT emulator v0.51! New in this release is:

    • SBSND SoundBlaster code fixed for low end soundblasters.
    • Drum emulation improved (volume, more drums, pitch) Sounds very good!
    • If you use SBSND, press O for an visual waveform, and again to see the 'drum' chip's registers (debug info for me)
    • Waveform sounds are now clipped (no static when loud sounds are played)

  • DragonYen of Elitegamer interviewed Johan Kohler (Drac) about his NeoGeo emulator 'Gekko'. In this very interesting interview he states that a commercial version of Gekko should be released this winter which will run 8 assorted games with sound (not 100% yet)!
Thanks to EmuZoo for the news!

Thursday, 24. September 1998

  • As announced you can now get the updated romfiles for the *upcoming* MAME v0.34beta4 from SYS2064! Jump to this page, it is crappy looking but does the deed!

  • The rom-images of two fighting games have are now available: Arcade Roms from Japan release 'Street Fighter 2 Jap' and Romlist release the unemulated 'Virtua Fighter'!

  • Lord13 put up some WIP screenshots from 'Cavemnan Ninja' working with MAME!

  • Please bear with me, I have finals right now and updates are a bit slower then usual. I try to get everything done but my days are just packed...

Wednesday, 23. September 1998

  • You can see screenshots from 'Rodland' and 'Taito/Sega Tetris' both playable with Raine on the official Raine homepage!

  • I will add the updated MAME roms (for the upcoming v0.34b4) to SYS2064 tonight or tomorrow and I decided that I keep my policy not to carry unofficial MAME releases on SYS2064, so please go to other pages for them!

Tuesday, 22. September 1998

  • Anders Nilsson and Janne Korpela release a beta version of NeoRage! The news of this version straight from the read.me: "This is a NeoRage beta version, it supports alot more games an NeoRAGE0.2d and it have no crc check so you can try all games. We have also support for Kiwi's genie database you must put your Genie.gdb in same directory as NeoRAGE."

  • And to celebrate the new NeoRage, Romlist release 'Ninja Masters'!
  • If you use MAME you will need to change another batch of romsets with updated versions for v0.34beta4. Team MAME decided to use a better (CRC32) checksum algorithm to check the supported romsets for integrity and they found a couple of sets with corrupt roms and/or roms with file length mismatches. If everything goes as planned I will have the changed romsets up tonight so you can start downloading them as soon as possible! Read Brad Olivers statement from the official MAME messageboard here!

  • Another day, another NeoGeo rom release :). After yesterdays Mahjong game NeoCharity release "King of Fighters '97" today! It does not work with NeoRage v0.2d!

  • The new NeoGeo rom dumper Apollo69 has a homepage, too: http://home1.gte.net/apollo69/!

Monday, 21. September 1998

  • Somebody called Apollo69 released a new NeoGeo rom called 'Mahjong Kyo Retsuden'. It is in japanese and doesn't work with the current NeoRage! Read the whole newsbit and grab the rom from Dave's Classics.

  • Emulators Unlimited put up some exclusive screenshots from 'Blood Bros.', 'Cabal' and 'Darius' all playable on an upcoming version of Raine! Hurry up and take a look!

Sunday, 20. September 1998

  • Again it is time to recommend another nice emulation site: Snarkofagen's Emulation! Take a look! The update of my Links page is coming along nicely and should be up soon!

Saturday, 19. September 1998

  • Dave released DTMNT emulator v0.50! New in this release is:

    • Drums - but they are not truly emulated, kick/snare/hihat are just hacked in. I left them in for 0.50 just because I happen to like them (I don't want e-mails saying they don't sound right - I don't expect them to!)
    • New SoundBlaster code (SBSND) rewritten by yours truly
    • SAVE and LOAD functions:
    • Virtual arcade machine never loses power (ram is saved and loaded before/after play)
    • Save (F5) and load states (F7). Use F8 to toggle save slot.
    • MOVIE recording:
    • SPEECH and THEME MUSIC are now back in. Also, it's now clear that the ROM set is incomplete, which is why only 1/3 of the speech is played. The ROM set is being updated (not by me).
    • DTCFG.TXT has been replaced by DTMNT.INI
    • Some command line options for commonly used functions:
    • MAME's new ym2151 code, thanks guys!

  • I am behind with answering my emails, sorry about that but I hope to catch up on Sunday!

  • It's been a long time since we had a day without arcade emulation updates, but nothing really happened...

Thursday, 17. September 1998

  • The official MAME homepage moved to Retrogames, click here to visit it!
  • All the new MAME romsets are now up and can be found in The Vault! If a romset is not listed then it is because it is merged with its parent set, grab that instead. Please go to the 'NeoGeo section of The Dump' to get 'Neo Mr. Do!'. Any problems with downloads from CGs FTP might be solved very soon, stay tuned! ;-)
  • Nicola Salmoria released MAME v0.34 beta 3! The new romsets will be added tomorrow. Among the new features is support for 'Neo Mr. Do!' which isn't supported by NeoRage yet. Click here to read the full list of additions to beta 3!
Thanks to EmuViews for the news!
  • Grab all the new MAME romsets from MacMame.Org's FTP! I will add these sets to 'The Vault' tonight.

Wednesday, 16. September 1998

  • Here is a site of a new arcade rom dumper: members.xoom.com/ricardofvg/engdumproms.htm! Thanks to EmuSpain for the news!
  • One of my favorite sites EmuZoo has moved. They can now be found under this address: homepages.infoseek.com/~emuzoo!

Tuesday, 15. September 1998

  • Another game has been added to Raine: 'Crime City'! Take a look at some screenshots on the official Raine homepage! Also: 'Rastan Saga' and 'Master of Weapons' are now playable with sound!

  • JoseQ of Emuviews interviewed Richard Bannister (MAC port of Retrocade). Read it here!

  • My Links page is going to be revamped real soon and a lot of new sites will be added, so if you want your page to be listed, let me know!
  • Arcade Roms from Japan release a new NeoGeo rom: 'Neo Mr. Do!' Romlist mirrors the file, too!

Monday, 14. September 1998 - the Retrocade Day!

  • Neil Bradley and Mike Cuddy release the long awaited Retrocade v1.0! A lot has been said about Retrocade over the last months and now it's your turn to see it with your own eyes. Retrocade has a lot of unique features and is fast as hell, so have fun!
  • Again, I am sorry, but it turns out that *ALL* PAK-files have been updated for the release version, so if you downloaded them earlier, please get them a second time, as the old files won't work with Retrocade v1.0! Get the updated pak-files on the Retrocade page now! You need to unzip the zipped pak-files for the use with Retrocade!
  • JoseQ's Emuviews has some nice looking screenshots of 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Terminator 2' running under MAME!

  • In addition to the MAME message board there are two new messageboards: the MAME32 mesage board and a MacMAME board :-)! Thanks to John Hardy IV (MAME32 QA Test and Art Dept.) for the mail about the MAME32 board!

Sunday, 13. September 1998

  • Warrior did a review of the upcoming Retrocade and added an interview with Neil Bradley! Take a look at it here!
  • Dave's Classics reports that there still might be some changes to the Retrocade .pak-files before the release! I'm sorry about that but I'll indicate any updated files on the Retrocade page. Well, at least grab the rom-images right now! ;)
  • Peter Hirschberg released v0.2beta of his 'Marble Madness Emulator'. Here is what's new:

    • Added support for DirectDraw full-screen mode (big performance increase - now runs full speed or better on my P133)
    • Replaced Windows menus and dialogs with an 'on-screen-display' type interface. Invoke it with the [TAB] key.
    • Fixed the inter-cpu communications (unfortunately the game still won't coin-up. Keep using FREEPLAY mode for now. Also, for some reason, the coin switches only work with romset 1, so currently the emulator will only work with that set.)

Saturday, 12. September 1998

  • My Retrocade page is up and running :) You can get all the rom-images and all support files from it right now! As soon as Retrocade is ready to be released, it will be on SYS2064, too! Screenshots of all supported games will be added, soon!

  • JoseQ of Emuviews interviewed Neil Bradley who talks about Retrocade, Frank Palazzolo about the 'defeated' of the slapstic protection of the Atari System One and Two games and last but not least Alex Pasadyn about the addition of the Williams games (Smash TV, NARC) to MAME!

Friday, 11. September 1998

  • Brand-new Raine news, straight from the official homepage: 'Space Invaders DX ' was added (click the name for screenshots) and there will be more sound in the emulated games!

  • Updates might be a bit slower this weekend, sorry!

Thursday, 10. September 1998

  • Two more things: The MAME Message Board is back and if you like to get more information on MAME and Retrocade, I recommend that you listen to the latest edition of Shane Monroe's RetroRadio, which features an interview with Brad Oliver (MacMAME)! Thanks to Marvin for the email!

  • Just a small announcement: My Retrocade page will be online Saturday or Sunday at the latest. You will get all the support paks and roms here, too. I could put them online right now, but there might be some minor changes to the pak-files in the next days, so grab them on Sunday and you'll still be on time and ready for the big release!

  • 2 days after the big NeoGeo rom release by Romlist they are at it again (not that I'd complain :)...Grab 'Magical Drop 3' and 'Fatal Fury 3' on their homepage. Btw: If you like to see a list of all currently released NeoGeo roms with their japanese names, the manufacturer, the release data and their sizes, just click here!

Wednesday, 09. September 1998

  • Comebacks galore! In addition to the return of Arcade Roms from Japan, NeoCharity and JoseQ's EmuViews are back!

  • Chris Kirmse and Michael Soderstrom release MAME32 v0.34 beta2 in sync with the DOS port released a couple of days ago. I recommend John IV's MAME32 page to get a lot of cool MAME32 support files (new backgrounds, icons, etc.)! Thanks to John Hardy IV for the news!

  • Peter Hirschberg (author of Vector Dream) released a new singlegame emulator for Atari's classic game 'Marble Madness'. It is quite fast and for Win9x. Here is the full list of features from v0.1beta:

    • Uses Neil Corlett's Starscream 68000 CPU core (100% assembly)
    • Uses Neil Bradley's m6502 6502 CPU core (100% assembly)
    • Transluscent marbles
    • Transluscent alphanumerics layer
    • Native Windows© 95/NT

Thanks to Dave's Classics for the news!

  • Arcade Roms from Japan are back. Click here to get to the new location!

Tuesday, 08. September 1998

  • What a way to start the day! :) Romlist release not one, not two, not three but FIVE new NeoGeo games today! They are: Art of Fighting 3, Double Dragon (NeoGeo), Neo Bomberman, Twinkle Star Sprites and ZedBlade! Click their banners while downloading, will you ? ;)

Monday, 07. September 1998

  • Germany celebrates!!!!

  • I finally updated the Raine page to add all screenshots from Raine v0.14 as well as the List of emulated Videogames!

Sunday, 06. September 1998

  • Emulators Unlimited did an interview with Org of Romlist. Read it on their page!

  • Two bad news today: 1) yesterdays mirror of RBFF2 seems to be dead and 2) chemicals messageboards (for Dave's Classics and Romlist) are down since they produced too much traffic :(

Saturday, 05. September 1998

  • Here is a link to download 'Real Bout Fatal Fury 2' which is a) quite fast and b) still alive :)) This is not my server so if the files are gone soon, don't blame me ;)

Friday, 04. September 1998

  • Dave released DTMNT emulator v0.49! These are the new features:

    • A bit more user-friendly (e.g. autodetects which rom set you have)
    • Fire flicker effect is now an option
    • Fixed a bug in hicolor PCX saving (Allegro's fault, not mine!)

  • NeoCharity has indeed released a 'server killer' :) Hurry up and download 'Real Bout Fatal Fury 2'!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you!

Yesterday SYS2064 broke another barrier: 100.000 page hits!!! Christopher Atkins was the lucky visitor and again I thank him and everybody else who visits SYS2064 for the continued support and for the encouraging mails I get. As told yesterday, there will be some changes over the next weeks so stay tuned for things to come! :))

  • 'Arcade Roms from Japan' is down at the moment for unknown reasons, but jrom put up a preliminary page instead.

Wednesday, 02. September 1998

  • Anders Nilsson and Janne Korpela release NeoRage v0.2d! All that crap with the hacked version didn't make Anders and Janne stop the development, but they mentioned in the read.me that sound support will be delayed or even never supported :( Well, here is the list of new features (btw: I love: "Support for xxxxxxxxx" :))

    • Some games was frezing the first time you started it with 0.2c but that should be eliminated now.
    • Savestate bugfix again ;), unfortunally it can make your old state files useless with this version.
    • Sidewinder player two bug-fix.
    • Character bug-fix in some games.
    • Super Sidekicks protection fix (thanks to whom discovered it).
    • Fatal Fury 2 protection fix (thanks to whom discovered it).
    • We have start to use PMODEW instead of DOS4GW
    • Support for Art Of Fighting 3.
    • Support for Blazing Star.
    • Support for Samurai Shodown 4.
    • Support for xxxxxxxxx ;).
    • Support for xxxxxxxxx ;).
    • And MS2(hate to do this:(. Because of the hacking lamers).

  • Romlist celebrate the release of the new NeoRage by releasing 'Samurai Shodown 4'!

  • If you happen to be visitor 100.000 to SYS2064, please let me know and send me the screenshot. Thank you :) !

  • I finally had enough time to add all the romsets for Raine v0.14 to The Vault. Please excuse the delay, but my time is very limited right now. The new MAME v0.34 beta 2 romsets will be added hopefully tomorrow! I am going to do a huge face-lift for SYS2064 in the next weeks, which will improve the site in every possible aspect, so stay tuned. If you got any ideas and want to contribute, feel free to contact me!

  • On Dave's Classics you can see two very preliminary screenshots from 'Mortal Kombat' working in MAME!

Tuesday, 01. September 1998

  • Do you wonder about the meaning of the crypted message on NeoCharity ? Well, I don't know, but EmuZoo posted a possible explaination about two new NeoGeo games soon to be released! Take a look for yourself! :)

Click here to get to the top of the page!

August 1998

Monday, 31. August 1998

  • Romlist officially released the two NeoGeo roms 'Waku Waku 7' and 'Street Hoops' that were ripped a few days ago from RomLists server! That makes three NeoGeo roms for today!

  • NeoCharity released a new NeoGeo rom: 'Spin Masters', grab it as soon as possible!

  • I am really sorry about the delay to add the roms from the new MAME and the new Raine, but I am very busy right now. Don't despair, hurry over to the great EmuSpain and get all new roms there!

  • The day starts with a bang :) Richard Bush released Raine v0.14 - the Liquid Islands release :)! 14 new supported romsets: Arabian Magic, Cleopatra's Fortune, Darius 2, Darius Gaiden, Dinorex, DriftOut, Growl, Jigoku, Jumping, Liquid Kids, Superman, Tecmo Knight, Winter Bobble and WWF SuperStars! Take a look at the readme to see who you need to thank for dumping the romsets (which will be up tomorrow or later today) :) and here is the list of fixes:

    • Switched to MZ80 engine by Neil Bradley (much faster)
    • GUI colours and rom/ziprom/screenshot paths are now configurable in raine.cfg
    • Experimental soundfx in Terra Force, Armed Formation
    • Rainbow Islands (original) playable using Jumping Islands c-chip hacks
    • Rainbow Islands (extra) partially-playable using Jumping Islands c-chip hacks
    • Added Eagle 'smoothing engine' by Dirk Stevens
    • YM2203 music in Jumping Islands (need second YM2203 for sound fx)
    • Samples in WWF SuperStars
    • 10 SaveSlots per game, use F3 to switch slot
    • Started a simple 'Action Replay' type cheat system (no cheat finder yet)
    • Added more dipswitches and also a rom version modifier for Taito roms. Among other things, you can play Puzzle Bobble 2 and Twin Qix with all new gfx using the version modifier.
    • The 'brown' boxes are automatically disabled in Puzzle Bobble 2 and 3 now.
    • Average FPS option (F11 twice)
    • Defualt screenmode is mode-x now, because every other version of SDD seems to be buggy with Allegro! But you should switch to a vesa3/vbeaf mode if you can...

Sunday, 30. August 1998

  • Nicola Salmoria just released MAME v0.34 beta 2! The new supported romsets include the excellent game 'Pang'. Take a look at the list of all new games and features! Here is 'Pang', the rest of the new roms will be added later tonight, sorry!
Thanks to Retrogames who were the first to post the MAME binary :)

  • Another big NeoGeo release from Romlist: 'Blazing Stars' (Pulstar 2)! This game does not work with NeoRage v0.2c!

Saturday, 29. August 1998

  • Somedays ago I mentioned a promising webpage called 'World of Arcades'. This page is getting better every day, you must take a look!! Tons of new manuals were added and one of the latest additions is a Metal Slug 2 secrets page!

  • NeoCharity announced a CPS2 crack project. It seems that the approach is like the big RC5 project, where computers all over the world try to crack an encryption code by letting each participating cpu decrypt some of all available codes! Let's stay tuned if this will work.

Friday, 28. August 1998

  • Raine has added another Taito F3 game to the upcoming version: 'Arabian Magic'. Take a look at screenshots on the official homepage!

Thursday, 27. August 1998

  • And now I am even more impressed! Stop whatever you are doing, drop everything you are holding and head over to JoseQ's EmuViews to hear about the latest development in MAME: Alex Pasadyn and Zsolt Vasvari added very preliminary support for the newer Williams games like SmashTV, Mortal Kombat and a favorite of mine: NBA Jam! Friday, 21. August 1998

  • Two new NeoGeo roms released in the last hours! First there is 'World Heroes 2 Jet' released by NeoCharity and then there is 'Quest of Jongmaster' which is released by Arcade Roms from Japan! Arcade roms from Japan released a couple of other roms as well!

  • Anders Nilsson and Janne Korpela release NeoRage v0.2! New in this release is zip-support, highscore saving and savestates! IMPORTANT: You must get the new BIOS, too! Wednesday, 19. August 1998

  • Thunder, the upcoming emulator for Namco's classic 'Rolling Thunder', is, as you might have read, in beta4 now. The newest update adds (amoung other things) a GUI and sample support for the game, even the great in-game-musics are supported via samples. Regarding the speed I can tell you that it is slow on my P100 but still playable (especially when playing at 30Hz)! There are some bugs left in the emulation but right now you can say that Thunder is awesome!

  • The QSound player has been updated to the latest version and is available from the Callus section of SYS2064!!

Tuesday, 18. August 1998

  • Shane Monroe of Insert Coin released Retro Radio volume 2 today! RetroRadio is a weekly realaudio show which covers arcade emulation! Todays show features a voice interview with Mike Cuddy (KEM, Retrocade) covering the upcoming Retrocade and offers a lot of screenshots from the emu! Well worth the download or the online show! Great work Shane!

  • I ran out of time today so unfortunately the review of the Thunder emulator will be online tomorrow as well as a new release of Sardu's QSound player! Sorry about that!

Monday, 17. August 1998

  • As you might have read in the interview with Richard Bush by The Fox of Emulators Unlimited yesterday, you can now see some screenshots from 'Tecmo Knight' (Tecmo, 1989) and 'WWF Super Stars' (Technos, 1989) on the official Raine homepage!

  • Thunder beta 4 has been released to the beta-testers and I will post a small review tomorrow evening!

  • I added all of the new roms from MAME v0.34b1 to The Vault and finally completed all the rom merges and added all of the available proms from the bigprom.zip to the romsets! Some proms are still missing but most of the romsets are now ok. I suggest that you do a 'mame -verifyroms *' and then get all of the roms that are incomplete from the arcade emu site of your choice!

  • World of Arcades released the roms of 'Street Fighter III'! There is no emulator for this game yet and the file is 42mb compressed! Some new manuals are up, too, so take a look! Here you can see more from Street Fighter III !

  • A new promising NeoGeo rom website has opened! It is called NeoCharity and its aim is that people who own Neogeo carts and arcade boards send them to the site and then they will be dumped by NAZ (who dumped some cps2 games and KOF96 Mod)! They already dumped the arcade version of 'Soccer Brawl' which is already available as a cart dump though. Take a look at the site and see if you can help and most important, lets hope that it is not a fraud! Thanks to Retrogames for the news!

  • Lots of new PROMS for MAME. Grab this file to add most them! It could be that this set is incomplete, lots of romsets are still missing and some of the available sets for v0.34b1 are not the correct sets, too. I'll put them all up on The Vault when I have a 100% working batch! I'll keep you updated in the next days!

  • Nicola Salmoria released MAME v0.34 beta1! Lots of new games and the much anticipated NeoGeo support has been added! If you like you can read the whole What's New file! The new roms will be on 'The Vault' soon! For NeoGeo roms jump over to The Dump's Neogeo section or to Romlist!

  • This one is huge! Romlist release 'Shock Troopers' for the NeoGeo masses. The file is 18mb compressed!

  • Update!! The Fox of Emulators Unlimited interviewed Bartman (Win9x port of the System16 emu). Read it here and he interviewed Richard Bush (the mastermind behind Raine, too!) See it (and some pictures of coming attractions in Raine :) here!

  • Jeff the Riffer (Retrocade webmaster) posted a new message on the Retrocade Message Board to announce the current status of Retrocade! In short: more speed ups in different games, more games added, save game states for approx. 40 games and a non-public release candidate soon! Read the whole message here!

Saturday, 15. August 1998

  • Great Thunder news: Thunder will have full sound support with samples in the first release but the samples are 5mb compressed. Anyway, Thunder beta4 should be released soon and if everything goes as planned a public release shouldn't be that far away!

  • I put up a new version of Dave Spicer's Sparcade v2.25! Please note that although the version number still is v2.25, the files inside are newer and should fix some problems with 'Vulcan Venture' and some other games! Dave Spicer announced this new version on the Arcade Message Board!

Friday, 14. August 1998

  • Dave Spicer releases Sparcade v2.25! Some bugs are fixed and the ability to save games has been added. Here is the full list of updates:

    • Vulcan Venture sprite<->background priorities fixed

    • Terra Cresta's second fire button can now be redefined
    • Terra Cresta's performance improved for slow machines

Thursday, 13. August 1998

  • Not exactly arcade emulation related: Head over to the MESS homepage and get MESS v0.2 beta 4 which has just been released! MESS is a multi console/computer emulator which is based on MAME. Right now only the Mac and DOS versions are available but more ports will arrive soon.

  • PC Arcade reports news on the upcoming NEoRage:

    • New screen shots of King Of Fighters '96 on homepage
    • Samurai Showdown 3 - works
    • Street Hoop - works

    • King of monsters 2 - works

  • Some news you may *like to hear* straight from the System16 homepage: "Get Ready! The 16-CH SEGA PCM sound chip found on many classic SEGA 3D arcade boards is emulated! Full sounds for Outrun, Space Harrier and Super Hang-On can be available in the next release."! The next release is going to be the big sound update I guess :-)

Wednesday, 12. August 1998

  • The rom-dump of 'Top Hunter' from Romlist was not 100% correct. To fix the graphical glitches, get the fix file from Romlist which is only 800Kb!

  • I can't confirm this myself (since I am not on the MAME Dev-Team) but various sources confirm that the Neogeo support in an upcoming MAME release should be quite good and even faster than NeoRage!

  • Retrogames release a new NeoGeo game: 'King of Fighters '96 (modified version)' [19mb, does not work with the current NeoRage!]. Surprisingly this is *not* a Romlist release but comes from the guy who dumped the english CPS2 romsets.

  • Powerjaw? released two new arcade romsets: 'Spelunker 2' (Irem, 1986) and 'Splatterhouse' (Namco, 1988). Please keep in mind that they are currently unemulated!

  • Retrocade adds support for 'Arch Rivals' (Bally/Midway). See screenshots at the bottom of this page!

Tuesday, 11. August 1998

  • Romlist released 'Savage Reign' for all NeoGeo fans!

  • MAME32 v0.33 has just been released in sync with the DOS version of MAME!

  • Dave released another update to his DTMNT emulator (v0.47) but I don't offer it for download because he states on his webpage that he found some bugs after the release: "A bit important. I rushed out dtmnt047.zip without checking it heavily, and just after uploading it found two strange bugs (TYPICAL!) - firstly it writes a debug.log file, and secondly it crashed and I don't know why. So I wouldn't use it. Wait till I fix it."

  • On Arcade Rom Heaven you can see screenshots from preliminary MAME support for 'Greatest Swordman' and 'Mr. Viking'!

Monday, 10. August 1998

  • I want to recommend four websites that are not arcade emulation related (so they don't fit on my links page right now) but I visit them often and like them very much!

Sunday, 09. August 1998

  • MAME v0.33 is now officially released. There are no new romsets supported (compared to v0.33rc1) and I don't know if anything was changed since v0.33rc1! MAME v0.33 (counted over all beta versions) adds a total of 151 new romsets to make a total of 629 supported romsets, impressive :))

  • JoseQ of Emuviews interviewed Dan Boris (MAME). Read it here!

Saturday, 08. August 1998

  • Here you can see some work in progress screenshots from upcoming MAME additions: 'Sega Ninja', 'Hard Hat', 'Flicky', 'I'm Sorry' and 'Teddy Boy Blues'! The official release of v0.33 should be soon with a v0.34 beta1 followed soon after!

  • Romlist added some teaser screenshots from upcoming NeoGeo releases: 'Double Dragon', 'Fatal Fury 3' and 'Twinklestar Sprites'!

  • I am searching for a web- or ftp-site with southpark movies in mpeg (or avi) format. If you can help me, please contact me immediately!!

Saturday, 08. August 1998

Thursday, 06. August 1998

  • Raine WIP news: Two new romsets have been added: 'Darius Gaiden' and 'Jumping', an italian bootleg of Rainbow Islands, which is finally playable! :)

  • Dave released DTMNT v0.43! Numerous fixes and speedups in this release:

    • Got the new Z80 working (MZ80 - many thanks to Neil Bradley) Big speed increase (about 80% faster with 16000hz sound)
    • Proper shadows (in hicolor modes they look better than 8-bit)
    • gamma correction option if your monitor is dark (in dtcfg.txt)
    • So-called 'trippy sprite'(!) option - displays all frames of sprite animation (hit T to activate)
    • ym2151_amp variable in dtcfg.txt (higher values = louder music as long as it doesn't overflow; default is 18)
    • alter_pitch varible (dtcfg.txt)
    • Finally sorted out dip switches (dtcfg.txt) (try dip_switch2 0xe2 for the damn hard version!)

Wednesday, 05. August 1998

  • Roberto Ventura released JFF - Just For Fun v0.15! New in this release is support for Capcoms 'Higemaru' and some bugfixes in Psychic 5! Grab the Higemaru roms from The Vault!

Tuesday, 04. August 1998

  • Today SYS2064 celebrates two anniversaries!!!

I follow the emulation 'scene' since 1995 and I saw many great emulation sites come and go in these past years (most notably Node99 and Atmospherical Heights). In 1997 I decided to create my own site and so SYS2064 was born on August, 4th 1997 with the simple goal to build a showcase for all of those wonderful arcade emulators that make it possible to see and play some of the best games in history again. I never thought that arcade emulation would become that popular and that there were so many different arcade games from the past emulated right now. Maintaining SYS2064 has been a pleasure in the last year and hopefully will be in the next couple of years!!! :-))

The second anniversary is a smaller one: I moved SYS2064 to Classicgaming.Com one month ago and I am very pleased with that move. The number of daily visitors is now more than twice as much as before and a rom section was added. Expect improvements and lots of updates in the next weeks and be sure to come back and bring your friends :))

I'd like to thank all of you who visit SYS2064, Cam of (the gone but not forgotten) FreePlay, Fragmaster of CG, the cool guys at Ping.De for their support in the first months (Idle!, Rossi), Alfredo, Banki, Fritze, Phan, Stickes and Wokik for support and of course thanks to all emulator authors out there for their magnificent work!

One last thing to everybody reading: please always remember: "FOR FUN - NOT FOR STATUS!"

  • The NeoRage homepage has been updated with pictures from three new dumped and emulated games: 'Real Bout Fatal Fury Special', 'Shock Troopers' and 'Waku Waku 7'!

  • According to Insert Coin, another private beta of Retrocade has been released and it seems that the emulator is getting more awesome with every beta version, read this (quoted from IC): "The GUI now has some cool sound effects. New games added: Amidar, Pioneer Ballon, The End, preliminary support for Boot Hill, and Yie Ar Kung Fu! YES! Many speed ups and bug fixes, too this release. Sinistar movement has been fixed, speed ups on lots of individual games, and sound in Frogger, Scramble, and Super Cobra!"

  • 'Super Sidekicks 2' is available from Romlist! There are some graphic problems with this game, so please don't complain but wait for future NeoRage versions!

Monday, 03. August 1998

  • Great news straight from the official System16 emulator homepage:

"The two YM3438 FM sound chips used by System 18 games had been succesfully emulated, thanks to Tatsuyuki Satoh, Hiromitsu Shioya and Kathleen Garcia. The PCM sound chip marked by 'ASSP 5C68A' also works. No external sound sample files will be needed for supporting the emulated system18 sounds."
[System18 games currently supported are: 'Alien Storm', 'Moon Walker' and 'Shadow Dancer']

Saturday, 01. August 1998

  • JROK announced some minor updates for JAS: "Mappy added to the high-score save. SkyKid save-score will be comming soon too"!

  • MAME WIP news from Dave's Classics: Phil Stroffolino and Nicola Salmoria have added support for 'Dark Adventure' and 'Avengers' and 'Wonderboy in Monsterland' has been greatly improved over the last update of its driver. Both improvements are more likely to be included in the first beta version of v0.34 but who knows? ;-)

  • Do you search for NeoGeo roms ? I suggest you take a look at NeoGeo section of 'The Dump' !

  • Here is a site which tries to gather as much information as possible regarding the emulation of Mortal Kombat! Take a look to see if you can help...

Click here to get to the top of the page!

Thursday, 23. July 1998

  • I spent the last two days with rom-merging for MAME, which isn't that difficult after all. Anyway, the merging saved more then 20mb of diskspace and I suggest that you all should consider either merging the roms by yourself or getting the merged roms from the rom sites. I am going to test *all* of my merged roms in the next days and hope to have them all up in The Vault by the weekend.

Wednesday, 22. July 1998

  • OK...I added all new romsets, I guess ;-) If you notice that a set is missing, please contact me. I will spend my free time this week with merging the roms and I will update all romsets at the weekend. As usual, get the roms from The Vault!

  • MAME never ceases to surprise me. A couple of months ago, I did not think MAME would support Capcom System One games for a long time and now it does...Dave's Classics report today that somebody wrote a working (but preliminary) driver for the NeoGeo for MAME. 7 games are supposed to be working right now, but Dave states that this driver probably won't be included in the next release. Simply incredible!!!

Wednesday, 08. July 1998

  • The System16 emulator adds another game: 'Major League'! The controls are not working yet but everything else is done. Click here for some screenshots.

Sunday, 05. July 1998

  • After a totally disappointing football match yesterday :(( there are some good news today. First of all, the Raine homepage is back at a new location and according to the page a new release should be in the next few days. Take a look at some new screenshots and the news here!

    Silber Award

Saturday, 04. July 1998

  • Welcome to the new location of SYS2064. As you can see I didn't had the time to do new graphics yet, but this will be done in the next couple of weeks! The navigation bar on the left will be updated, too. If you stumble over broken links or anything unusual, please let me now!

  • Blood released a new version of his excellent MAME frontend FeMAME. This version (v2.0beta) adds support for all features of the beta versions of MAME and even takes care of the new rom mergings that need to be done with beta6 and following (read about it on the MAME WIP page!)!

  • Another great MAME utility has been updated, too. Ian Pleasance released MAMEAud v1.39! This is a very useful programm to handle your MAME rom directory.

  • Lots of Retrocade news were posted by 'Jeff the Riffer' on Dave's Arcade Message Board!

  • JoseQ is busy interviewing emu authors...the latest is with Jimmy Hamm (the author of the upcoming Thunder)! Read it here.

Thursday, 02. July 1998

  • Things are going slow right now, I sure hope that there will be some releases soon. Anyway, as I told you before, SYS2064 will move on July, 4th to be the successor of 'Freeplay' at Classicgaming.Com. This move will be the first step to major improvements because CG offers unlimited webspace and I will maintain the arcade section of 'The Vault' which means that rom-images will be available for download! I hope that you will be pleased by the move and keep in mind that the only thing I am interested in are arcade emulators and not policies and stuff. My motto is "'For Fun - Not For Status!" :)

  • RomList released 'Samurai Shodown 2' and put up a teaser for 'NeoTurfmasters'!
