Wednesday, 29. December 1999

  • Do you you like some more Raine development news? Antiriad posted a couple of screenshots of "Special Criminal Investigation" (Taito, 1989) on the Raine messageboard! They look great but he doesn't mention if there are still problems with the emulation of that game!

  • Zan updated his "How to compile MAME page", be sure to take a look and try to compile your own version of MAME!

  • World of Arcades dumped another yet unemulated romset: Aliens (US version, Konami 1990)!

Tuesday, 28. December 1999

  • Go to the Raine homepage for screenshots from Dead Connection (taito, 1992) which is now supported by Raine!

Monday, 27. December 1999

  • UPDATE: World of Arcades dumped *3* currently unemulated romsets: Prehistoric Isle (Bootleg version, SNK, 1989), Ikari III (World version, SNK, 1989) and Guerrilla War (Version1, SNK, 1987)!

Sunday, 26. December 1999

  • Mike Green just updated the EmuDX homepage with awesome screenshots of the EmuDX version of Donkey Kong and these development news:

    • Brand new screenshots of EmuDX's crown jewel "Donkey Kong", showing all 4 stages and the Title screen. These are quite easily the best quality screenshots to date. Dont forget to click on them to increase the resolution.
    • Donkey Kong is now almost complete, only lacking sound effects. This Virtually guarantees that EmuDX1.0 will support 5 enhanced games, but we're not finished yet :-)
    • Galaxian now has stereo sound effects and music in place, although it is a little weird in places. The Video side of Galaxian has been re-written, giving a much needed speed increase.
    • Frogger has also had its music re-wired and now is only lacking a few sounds for it to be complete.
    • A Private beta release will be made very soon. If that goes well, there is the potential for a restricted public beta.

Be sure to take a look right now and thanks to Mike for the mail!

  • Slow day for arcade emulation so far, feel free to submit any news!

Saturday, 25. December 1999

  • Gridle updated the MAME WiP page with news from the last 3 days! Thanks to Brian Troha for the news!

Friday, 24. December 1999

  • Frohe Weihnachten and Merry Christmas to all of you! Thank you and all the best for your continued support and of course a huge thank you to every emulator author for the grat work they do!

  • No Impact release this christmas! There have been some rumors about this but today the official homepage was updated stating that there won't be a release over christmas! Read the whole newsbit here!

  • Brian Galm released a new version of PacMAME with these new features:

    • Added 'Super Pacman (Midway)'

  • Roman Scherzer released the ClrMAME RC1d, the XMas edition with the following new features:

    • misc: combined 'unneeded' and 'name' check/fix. You can't do an unneeded check without a name check anymore. Same with fix option. So CMPro don't remove 'unneeded' files which only have a wrong name.
    • misc: some better 'unzip error' messages
    • fixed: 0-crc-creation should only be called when gameset exists
    • fixed: didn't create destination rebuild folder when dropping roms
    • fixed: wrong rebuilder-unzip-messagebox button ('YES' <-> 'NO')
    • fixed: unused F1-Help key

Thursday, 23. December 1999

  • The MacMAME team released MacMAME v0.36 beta 12 with these changes:

    • In sync with DOS beta 12. [Aaron Giles]
    • Rewrote the video subsystem from scratch. This has a number of implications; check the documentation. [Aaron Giles]
    • Added contextual menus in the frontend listbox, displaying information about the selected romset and its clones. [John Butler]
    • Added Konami PPC CPU core based off the 6809 core. [Aaron Giles]

  • Here are your daily EmuDX development news straight from the homepage:

    • More new graphics for you to feast your eyes upon. First Donkey Kong Screenshots now uploaded, albeit without any sprites. Also you can now see the new frogger screenshots in full colour glory!
    • Pacman has moved from 256 to 24bit colour. One good thing about this is that Pinky is once again pink, rather than green! Check out the new high res screenshots of pacman on our screenshots page, along with the awesome Donkey Kong and Frogger artwork.
    • Another candidate has joined the list of games to be included in EmuDX, that game is Mappy. This will be the first 6809 CPU based game.

  • Dave Spicer released a *bugfixed* Sparcade v2.33b beta! "This release fixes a minor problem which prevented the audio from working correctly in Gradius 3"!

Wednesday, 22. December 1999

  • To use the Gradius 3 romset from Arcade Rom Heaven with the new version of Sparcade you just have to rename the roms or you can download a small batchfile written by me which will do this for you, enjoy! :-)

  • Dave Spicer released Sparcade v2.33 beta with these new features:

    • "Please note that this version is strictly a 'beta' release and has many known problems. Please refer to the readme.txt file for more details"
    • Gradius III, Galaga, Arkanoid and Airwolf drivers
    • VESA 2 support
    • Recordable games
    • Improved YM2151 emulation (audio in Vulcan Venture, Gradius II, Gradius III and Salamander)
    • Stereo audio (not used in many games as yet)
    • Audio sound quality improved via use of interpolation/oversampling
    • Fixed slowdown during bench test
    • Improved history sequence in Vulcan Venture, though still buggy
    • Various improvements to games running on Galaxian-style hardware
    • Most drivers now run faster

Thanks to everybody who send the news to me and be sure to grab the mystery rom from Arcade Rom Heaven! :-)

  • The MAME WIP page is updated with news and screenshots from the last 3 days!

  • Matt Ownby, the author of the laserdisc game emulator Daphne is looking for somebody to draw some graphics for the next release of his emulator (which will add a graphical scoreboard, a GUI config screen and joystick support):
"I was wondering if you could put the word out that I am in need of an artist or two to draw LED's (the kind you see on the scoreboard of Dragon's Lair)? I actually have a blank LED that I scanned in from a real Lair scoreboard, it's just the numbers (0-9) that I don't have."!

  • Usually I don't report news on unofficial MAME derivates but I am going to make an exception for PacMAME. PacMAME is a MAME version which only emulates PacMan games but includes tons of PacMan hacks as well for a total of 85 supported games. It's very well done and you should really take a look at it here!

Tuesday, 21. December 1999

  • The Raine homepage added screenshots of a nice racing game now supported by Raine: Continental Circus (aka Continental Circuit, Taito, 1989)! Thanks to Gerardo Oporto for the news!

  • Are you curious how the DX'ed version of Donkey Kong might look like? Vega-X did a new background and you can see it here! Impressive!

  • In case you didn't notice, I got rid of the background image on SYS2064 yesterday and I will do some more subtle changes to the layout and the site in the coming days! :-)

  • More and more EmuDX development news straight from the homepage:

    • Donkey Kong is about to make its debut in EmuDX. I recieved the first set of graphics and they look awesome. Certainly one to look forward to.
    • Galaxian and Frogger have moved from 256 to 24bit colour, along with some speed improvements. The overall quality of the images has improved dramatically. You can see some new screenshots of Galaxian here, which will be joined soon by new pictures of Frogger, Mooncresta and possibly Phoenix.
    • It was inevitable, the first multi processor game to be emulated by EmuDX will be Galaga! It is in doubt whether it will be possible to include it in EmuDX1.0, but you never know.
    • Potentially, this raises the number of games enhanced by EmuDX1.0 to NINE.

On the old homepage you can read the following WIP news of EmuDX:"Mooncresta is coming along exteremely well, along with Phoenix. This means the current total of games to be supported in the upcoming EmuDX1.0 is at SEVEN! It is extremely likely that they will be joined by another 2 or 3 games, making the first release more promising. Screenshots of MoonCresta and Phoenix will be available very soon."

Thursday, 02. December 1999

  • EmuHQ just posted a new status report on EmuDX straight from one of the EmuDX team:

    • EmuDX is progressing, albeit slowly and painfully, especially with my total lack of internet access at the right times.
    • Here's the games we *should* see supported in the next release: PacMan, Ms. PacMan, Galaxian, Pengo, and Phoenix.
    • There should also be an assortment of sound card options (for people with sblive in particular)
    • There's also other stuff that is still in progress. I'm looking into what other games can be included easily now that the program structure has changed totally, giving us the ability to plug new games in, or at least better than before.
    • If things go well, such as the pengo/phoenix graphics, then I want to get the first big EmuDX release in, along with the screensaver and theme for Windows before Christmas, but all that really relies on the availability of the improved graphics & sound in time. If this is not the case, it won't be available until after the new year.

    • Added rotation and flipping support in about 40% of games.

    • Finally added zooming sprites in Ninja Kids, Growl (should of done it ages ago when I did the other games...).
    • Now compiled with gcc 2.95.2 and allegro3927. Merged Sidewinder alt into a single driver.

    Rom Changes:

    • tatsujn2: tsj2rom2.bin is cut from 512kb to 256kb.

    • Fixed issue where "Force 16-bit video" wasn't working. Note that not all drivers will render correctly if you force this depth, so report any oddities (we already know about Pong) to the appropriate message boards (URLs in the readme). [Brad Oliver]

    Beta 10 new features:

    • In sync with DOS beta 10. [Brad Oliver]
    • Added some PPC assembly optimizations to the tms34010 core. [Aaron Giles]
    • Fixed the workaround for RAVE video distortions under MacOS 9/OpenGL 1.1.2. [Brad Oliver]
    • Added workaround for bug in InputSprocket 1.7.x and USB Gravis Gamepads. The 'dpad' need is broken on some USB devices (but not all), so I split it into 4 unique direction needs. [Brad Oliver]
    • You can now set the creator type for the text files the reports generate. The default type is "R*ch" which is BBEdit. Find this by clicking on the "Options..." button in the front-end. [Brad Oliver]
    • Many miscellaneous bug fixes and code cleanup. Additionally, the sample audit is disabled for this beta - it will return in the next release. [Brad Oliver]

  • The EmuDX development is still going strong and these are the latest news:

    • Galaxian now making good progress. The graphics renditions are almost complete, and are making their way albeit slowly into the main emulation engine. A Preliminary screenshot is available here
    • Added Speedup cheats for Pacman & MsPacman
    • Added support for more soundcards via -sound n option.

  • The MacMAME team released MacMAME v0.36 beta 10 with these additions.

    • Added extremely tacky workaround for bugs in the ATi RAVE drivers in MacOS 9 and/or OpenGL 1.1.2. {Brad Oliver]
    • Added keyboard shortcut for grabbing screenshots - Command-G. Thanks for George Warner for the suggestion. [Brad Oliver]

  • More Impact news from IvilDeds site: another Capcom 3D fighting game from 1998 has been added: "Star Gladiator 2: Nightmare of Bilstein" a.k.a. "Plasma Sword"! Go to his site for tons of screenshots!

    • Fixed bug in the Z80 core which affected sounds in Jungle King. [John Butler]
    • Renamed some files/targets. [Aaron Giles]

  • The MAME32 team released MAME32 v0.36 beta 6! Thanks to John Hardy (of the excellent MAME32 Q&A page) for the news!

  • Haze (of Geoshock) startet a new project called CPS2Shock, take a look and god luck to the team!

  • The CPS Patch Center released the patch that makes SF Alpha playable on Callus with a little help from the CP Changer version! And the best thing is, this time they don't try to trick you into bannerclicking to get the file! ;-)

  • Looks like we're back! Thanks to everybody involved in bringing Emulation World "back to life"! :-)

  • Hehehe! H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) revealed the new model for the autumn collection! In their great tradition of beautiful H&M models like Anna Nicole Smith, Bridget Hall, Tyra Banks and Salma Hayek they now got actor *Steve Buscemi* (Fargo, Reservior Dogs, Armageddon) for their autumn collection! :-))
