December 1998

Thursday, 31. December 1998

  • Last update for this year: Nicola Salmoria released MAME v0.34 final! Unfortunately I can't tell you what has changed since rc2 so try for yourself!
Thanks to Pete from the great arcade emulation site PC Arcade for the news!

  • A great year for arcade emulation (and emulation in general) comes to an end and I like to take the time to thank every emulator author out there for his work! You all did magnificent things last year and you never ceased to amaze me with your releases. And thanks to everybody else who contributed to the arcade emulation society during the last 12 months (especially to all rom dumpers who supply the needed romsets for emulation) and last but not least thanks to all visitors and friends of SYS2064 for your support!

The last year was very exiting, here is a small retrospection and I hope I didn't miss too much:

    • The NeoGeo, the arcade system no.1 of the nineties was emulated (Danji, Gekko, MAME, NeoGem, NeoRage),
    • the long awaited Retrocade was unveiled in September,
    • the System16 emulator got full sound support (music in Out Run!),
    • MAME now supports more than 1000 romsets - incredible,
    • great new multigame emulators surfaced (eg. JAS, JFF, M72, Shark, Vector Dream, xDragon),
    • amoung the new singlegame emulators (eg. Annoid, Combat School, TMNT) was my alltime favorite arcade game: Rolling Thunder
    • and a "humble attempt of learning C and ASM" rose to become IMHO the emulator of 1998: RAINE!

On the bad side of things we got the recent witchhunt on romsites on the net by the IDSA and various other companies. Emulation got quite a lot of publicity last year - maybe too much. Well...let's wait and see how this develops in 1999.

But now enough of this rant, Ich wuensche Euch allen einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr und alles Gute! Good Bye 1998 and welcome to 1999!

Just one minor thing from me before the usage: all NeoGeo romsets must be called according to MAMEs wishes - to achieve that, get the list of all supproted NeoGeo games from MAME (mame -listclones neogeo >neogeo.txt) and print the neogeo.txt file to rename all files accordingly. • The homepage of the System16 and the M72 emulator moved to its own domain: http://www.system16.com/ and here are some great news about these two emulators:

    • M72: Nao added support for Hammerin Harry (jap) and the Irem M92 hardware (Gun Force, Blade Master, Undercover Cops, In The Hunt, R-Type Leo, Lethal Thunder, Hook and Maho-keibitai Gunho-ki (Mystic Riders) - no sound support yet). It has not been released yet but you can take a look at screenshots from these games on the homepage!

  • Thanks to Retrogames, here is a teaser version of the NeoGeo emulator Danji! Retrogames had some screenshots from Danji running Puzzle Bobble with sound a few weeks ago and now you can kinda test it yourself. This version of Danji has no documentation and runs the game "Samurai Shodown 2". You need to extract the roms in the same directory as the emulator and run a program to adjust the roms to Danji's need. I took a short look at it and can tell you that there are sound effects (no music) and the keys are: cursor keys for movement and 'y/z', 'x', 'c' and 'v' for the buttons, 'F1' resets the emulation! Download this version here!

  • Jonathan Grimm wrote a couple of useful batchfiles and a big how-to file for the use of Gerard Imberts NeoGeo Romfix (see yesterdays news)! Get it here (the NeoGeo romfix.exe is included!) and again, be sure to keep some backup files of your NeoGeo romsets till you can verify them with an upcoming version of MAME or NeoRage!

Sunday, 08. November 1998

  • Nothing arcade emulation related to report yet! But in other news take a look at some screenshots and nice progress reports from an upcoming emulator for Nintendo's Virtual Boy here and especially here!

  • Dave's Classics lists another bunch of NeoGeo romsets which are dumped incorrectly and need to be cut! Gerard Imbert send me this nice utility to help you cutting the roms but I had little time to test it yet. Be sure to keep some back-ups of the old romsets until you can verify the cutted romsets with an upcoming version of MAME!

  • Dave released DTMNT emu v0.54! Support for the complete sound roms has been added and the new and complete romset(s) will be here shortly!

Thanks to EmuSpain for the news!

Most of the credit for the new design goes to Stickes! Thanks for all of the help and check out his site 'Realms of Mordor' as soon as possible and feel free to give comments on the new design! :-)

Tuesday, 20. October 1998

I like the idea to use my SNES gamepad again because it is much better then the Sidewinder or the Gravis gamepads! Btw.: DTMNT v0.53 already added support for the SNES gamepad!

Wednesday, 14. October 1998

  • The grey days of learning are over...I passed my final university exams today :-))) In the following days I finally have time to test all the latest emulator releases and work on a new design for SYS2064. I am off to drink some beers and listen to awefully loud music :-))

Tuesday, 13. October 1998

  • I found a great site covering news from the big japanese game companies like SNK, Capcom, Square. It is called The MadMan's Cafe and has tons of news and screenshots from upcoming games and consoles (including latest news about the NeoGeo Pocket) from these companies. A must see for everybody!

  • Updates will be slow until Thursday, I hope to have all releases covered but my time is very limited. Expect a facelift of SYS2064 in the upcoming weeks since I should have more time soon! :-)

    • Trace play supports. Show your friends your best play records! Use F9 to record, F11 to play. Try it now!
    • Scanline display option. This option uses 800x600 display mode for doubling every dots. It will be a bit slower than the preferred 400x300 hardware double pixel mode But if your system happens to have no usable 400x300 display mode, this could work as a solution.
    • Alternate keyboard control set.
    • Sound states are put in save game data now.
    • Fixed two bugs that caused Gallop to crash at certain places.

Thursday, 08. October 1998

  • Since the arcade emulation scene is going slow today, I'd like to plug an upcoming PC game I am currently beta-testing! BlueByte is working on the final touches to "Die Siedler 3" ("The Settlers 3"), the successor of one of the best games I ever played! Siedler 3 is even better and will blow you away because it looks great and the gameplay is awesome! If you want to know more about this game, take a look at the official homepage and if you like to play a game of Siedler 3 online versus me, feel free to contact me - and of course if you want me to betatest your piece of software ;-) !

Wednesday, 07. October 1998

  • To everybody who complains about the speed of Thunder, press "F5" during gameplay to speed the emulation up considerably! I'd say that doing this makes the game playable even on low end Pentium machines like my P100! You should use SDD though!

  • It seems that a lot of arcade emulation pages hope to attract more visitors by setting up MAME WIP pages. Big Jack's Arcade Emulation has one and of course there is the official WIP page but if I have to recommend one, I'd say that the best is GuruChocs WIP page on Arcade Rom Heaven! Take a look!

Tuesday, 06. October 1998

  • Jimmy Hamm apparently decided to release the latest beta version (beta4) of his long awaited Thunder (the Rolling Thunder emulator) to the public (as reported by Dave's Classics)! Well I know you can't wait, so here is the emulator, the roms and the samples to relive this fantastic game. The entry on the single game emulators page will be up soon.

  • Joergen Bech released a new MAME rom manager which should make the handling of merges and adding of prom very easy. As soon as I finish downloading the huge file from his homepage at the very slow Xoom I will try it and offer ir here on SYS2064. Please go to his homepage in the meantime: http://members.xoom.com/xoomjbech/index.html!

  • Martin Pugh released a new cheat.dat file for the use with MAME. The file is now 44kb zipped and 241kb unzipped! Get it from the MAME page or from my utilities page!

Monday, 05. October 1998

Thursday, 01. October 1998

  • I just found a site called Sil's Sillymame's webpage! On this site you can find 37 single game emulators along with their source codes. Nearly all games are already emulated by MAME, but there is a single-game emulator for "Mr. TNT", which should be in an upcoming version of MAME! I did not test any emulators from that site, but I'll take a look at them soon.

  • Two more NeoGeo roms for the masses: Romlist release a fighting game called 'Operation Ragnagrad' and NeoCharity release a racing game called 'Over Top'.

  • Romlist moved to their own domain: http://www.romlist.com/!

  • A great emu news site and one of my favorites is on hiatus :((( EmuZoo, you will be missed!
